EAST Down Boxing Club opened its doors in January 2011 and has since then been a big hit for the wider Crossgar area.

To date 45 junior members have joined up and there are 22 seniors attending regularly. The club was started off by Martin Kayes  and the East Down’s three coaches Martin, Sean Bell and James Reynolds have all boxed themselves as amateurs and officiated at both County and Provincial level. Martin Kayes has also boxed in the professional ranks during his 15 year career.

The club was honored in September this year to see its first champion Dean Kayes lift the honours in the Down Armagh rounds. And the club’s first county champion was Ross Moore who achieve this honour in October 2011. At our first championships in the Down /Armaghs. We took four boxers down there and enjoyed a medal haul with two gold’s and two silvers.

Martin said, “The club is very popular with the local lads and numbers have been growing steadily. We are delighted at Dean and Ross who have managed to raise the profile of the club in such a short time. They proudly fought with the new club colours of green and purple.

“Club nights in Crossgar are on Mondays and Thursdays from 6.30-7.30pm for juniors and from 7.30pm fro seniors with the ladies having a class every Tuesday from 7pm.

“We must now be the fastest growing club in Ireland. There is always a great atmosphere at our training sessions. Our facilities are quite spacious. We have taken over an old chicken shed and it is big enough for our boxing ring and to hold all our equipment and train in comfortably.

“We hope to run our first promotional boxing tournament in the Crossgar War Memorial Hall later this year with both junior and senior boxers. It should be an excellent night and provide invaluable experience for the club and will be a great social night in the village.”
